AI and cloud are now setting much of the photonics agenda. For telcos, the opportunity spans advanced interconnect, metro DCI, optical assurance and selective hybrid processing, not just conventional optical transport.
Why it matters
Telecom once set much of the direction and economics of optical technology. Cignal AI estimated Q1 2026 datacom optical-component revenue at $7.7 billion, versus $2.0 billion for telecom, a ratio of almost four to one. A single quarter is not a permanent market law, but it illustrates how AI and cloud are broadening the agenda from optical communications towards photonics for switching, interconnect, sensing and computing.
Cignal AI optical-components market data, 1Q26 ↗What it is
Advanced photonics uses light for communication, switching, sensing and selected mathematical operations. Conventional fibre transport remains the foundation, but this explainer focuses on the newer boundary around silicon photonics, coherent pluggables, optical circuit switching, co-packaged optics, RF photonics and optical acceleration. Most deployable systems still combine optical components with conventional electronics.
What it is not
Photonic progress does not automatically create a telco revenue opportunity or give operators control of the technology roadmap. Device-level bandwidth, latency or TOPS figures are not system results. Optical cores still depend on lasers, electronic memory, converters, calibration, control, packaging and digital exception handling.
Telecoms read-acrossOperator opportunity begins where compute, data, storage and users are distributed beyond a rack or tightly coupled cluster. The strongest plays are endpoint-led metro and regional DCI, cloud and Internet-exchange access, enterprise-to-AI connectivity, route transparency and lifecycle NaaS. CPO and optical circuit switching may be important inside datacentres, but their effect on most telcos will be indirect.
How it works
Electronics and modulators translate data into optical amplitude, phase, wavelength or timing.
Optical paths, tiny loops and patterned surfaces combine or redirect light so several operations can happen in parallel.
Photodetectors convert the result back into an electrical signal.
Electronics correct drift, store information, perform operations the optical path cannot handle and coordinate the workload.
